The Golden Era of Gilded Glamour at MET Gala

The term ‘Gilded Age’ was coined and came into use in the 1920s and 1930s. Unmasking this in the novel of 1873, Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner’s presented satire of social issues offset by a thin gold gilding in the ‘The Gilded Age’. The so-called age witnessed major transformations in culture, politics and technology changing the face of modern America. The era extending from 1870 to 1900 saw economic growth in the Northern and Western United States.

The early times of the Gilded Age also coincided with the mid-Victorian era in Britain and France. Fashion reflected this extensively changing time of society and its norms. Over the top ensembles harmonised with the prospering technological advances in the textile industry of silk, tulle and lace. In the 1980s, American women got hooked to leisure sports like tennis and bicycling. Following suit, America entered into the age of sportswear.

This year, Met Gala gave the attendees the dress code of ‘Gilded Glamour, White Tie’. The red-carpet stunners to abide by the theme in sartorially explanatory terms and showcase their own interpretation of it. Such fashion moments bring a defining turn and reflect the style statements for the rest of the year. The Met Gala exhibit presented the best of couture from the western part of the world. Let’s sift through the Indian designers that speak of gilded glamour with their creative interpretation.

The Red Carpet

Blake Lively
Kylie Jenner

Breaking the internet, Blake Lively took over the red carpet in a transformational gown. The creation was incorporated with the Statue of Liberty colours and the Grand Central Station that features 12 zodiac constellations. Kylie Jenner chose an off-white wedding dress, accessorised with a veil attached to a baseball hat that was donned backwards.

Amit Aggarwal’s creation is in sync with the prospering construction during the gilded age with the metallic linear patterns. The layered panels on the waistline of the Kamaali Couture gown reprises Blake Lively’s gown in a low-key manner. Dolly J’s pale pink reckons with the whimsical wedding gown worn by Kylie Jenner. We recommend a bejewelled headgear to give the baseball cape a more harmonised spin.

Going off-beat, regency era met the gilded age on the MET Gala red carpet with a glamorous spin. Ashley Simone nailed her look clad in a gold and black speckled bustier ensemble. Phoebe Dynevor’s black gown was a sheer romance with the gothic culture.

Match the dazzling aura of the Bridgerton actress in a golden Shivan & Narresh bustier featuring metallic resin skein work. The black fringes and crystals on the party-ready Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna is the alter ego of Phoebe’s bewitching look.

The Golden Age

Khloe Kardarshian, Camila Mendes, Sara Sampaio interpreted gilded age in ostentatious golden gowns, reinstating its cult status for extravagant events. Similar to these stunners, the sequin-clad gown by Saksham & Neharika offer a modern reprise to the regency era that coexisted with the gilded age. Dolly J’s magnificent liquid gold gown translates gilded glamour in a literal way. Get the red capet rolling wherever you go wearing Rocky Star’s ethereal golden gown.

In a nutshell, corseted bodice, dollops of sparkles and opulent silhouettes, OTT elements are synonymous to the sartorial prevalence of the gilded age. Following the mandate, the risk-takers at MET Gala didn’t fail to make a bold proclamation.
