Luxury fashion brands embracing the art world

There have been many debates about the link between art and fashion- the similarities, boundaries and where the lines meet. Connoisseurs of luxury fashion believe that fashion is nothing but art that is wearable. Fundamentally synonymous with each other, the amalgamation of art and fashion is unquestionably an emphatic idea.

Fashion designers have looked to art for inspiration for a very long time. It is in recent times though, that designers are refreshingly defying expectations through their creations.  For instance, let’s talk about veteran designer Masaba. Known for her unconventional art inspired print collections, she continually manages to create splendid art pieces that are authentic and enchanting. As a creator who plays with an eclectic mix of inspiration, Masaba brings to life ecstasy-fuelled collections. Adding splashes of colour and unique prints and patterns, she manages to create simplistic garments with a hint of playfulness.

Considerably different, ace designer Gaurav Gupta is a master of creating Avant-Garde pieces inspired by art installations. Impeccably crafted his unconventional pieces look like they belong in a museum. With surreal and daring designs, his aim is to facilitate self-expression. Using the technique of optical illusions, he uses his garments as modern canvases to create distinctive silhouettes and extraordinary art pieces. It’s through his collections, that we recognize- just like art, fashion is universal and reminiscent as it takes of various forms and patterns.

Creating remarkable prints with doodles, mosaic art and Indian miniature paintings, Aartivijay Gupta is another designer who proves the existence of an entangled love affair that art and fashion hold. Gupta has unveiled a strong sense of innovation fused with her contemporary expression, and that is what sets her apart.  Basic and quaint silhouettes with a vibrant aesthetic have always been interpreted by her collection. Each garment proves to be an eye-catcher, yet simple and sophisticated. Similarly, Little things studio founder and designer – Ankita Srivastava, transforms illustrations, art and graphics to fantasy print stories to create unique styles. One main inspiration comes from hand drawing technique used by Matisse. The brand celebrates luxury and art in a cool and contemporary aesthetic. Following a simple design philosophy, every piece of clothing created by the brand has a story to tell. The perfect combination of quirky prints with modern silhouettes makes the designs absolutely appealing to the millennial audience.

In today’s world, new and young brands are making an effort to bring more people to recognise the power of art. Capturing the imaginative and intuitive thoughts of children dealing with mental disabilities, Aur converts artwork made by these children into digital prints and patterns and creates beautiful garments. The idea is to bring happiness and joy into the lives of these children using the power of colour and art.

Stirring away from confined barriers, Shahin Mannan steps forward with a bold and artistic expression to stand out as a distinct fashion label. Borrowing inspiration from ordinary bits of life and giving it an extraordinary spin, the label turns everyday motifs to doodles and uses them as prints and embroideries.

There’s no disputing that the symbiotic relationship has always existed between the two, only seems to be growing stronger as more art steps into the glamorous world of fashion. Not only does art inspired fashion promise connections, but also enhances the exclusivity of luxury fashion. These brands also provide a wider audience for art and artists as they bring more people to art.
