Ohaila Khan at Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop

Ohaila Khan presented her latest Bridal & Festive collections at Pernia’s Pop-Up Studio, Bandra on the 17th & 18th of May at an exclusive pop-up. The collections featured an array of classic Indian silhouettes mixed with Russian influences to create the perfect dose of drama for your festive wardrobe. Modern lehengas, robes shararas and anarkalis rendered with feminine frills, sultry corsets, edgy chains, antiquated zardozi work make the collection perfect for the extravaganza of a big fat Indian wedding. Blending Indian traditions with Russian, Latin and Parisian influences, the statement styles are a perfect choice for destination weddings.

We sat down with Ohaila for a quick chat about her label.

The beginning of the label:

“I’ve wanted to do this since I was a child! I studied design at London College of Fashion. But it’s really strange, the label actually began with Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop. We designed a capsule collection and got a great response on the website. And that’s how it actually started.”

Inspiration:

“I truly believe that there is no better education and way of expanding your horizons than travel! Art and culture really inspire me, so that’s where most of my inspiration comes from. I prefer to create something new, inspired by something different, rather than creating what already exists, or what the consumer thinks she wants. My consumer should look at my collection and loves it so much that she wants that.”

USP:

“The labels USP is developing new and unique embroidery techniques. I love combining different kinds of traditional and modern embroidery. And basically, the main focus of the label is- Elegance first!”

The Ohaila Khan Girl:

“Our creations of fun & flirty silhouettes bring to life our interpretation of the new age Indian Bride and her entourage. The garments flow depicts fluidity and flexibility of the Modern Bride who embodies confidence to adorn modern day silhouettes. Her love for travel is reflected in her strong unique play of silhouettes. Strongly rooted in her traditions she stands for the balance between these two worlds.”

Advice for New Designers:

“I think in a world where everyone is trying to conform and do what’s safe, you need to follow your vision!”
