Masaba Gupta Debuts ‘Chardi Kala’ at Hyundai India Couture Week 2026

After a six-year runway hiatus, designer Masaba Gupta made a spectacular return at Hyundai India Couture Week 2026, an initiative by the FDCI, presented in association with Nexxus New York at the prestigious Taj Palace in New Delhi. The collection – titled Chardi Kala – marked her brand’s official debut in bridal couture, drawing inspiration from the Punjabi philosophy of eternal optimism, resilience, and unshakeable joy. Showcasing pocketed lehengas, tissue sarees, and beaded velvet gowns in a rich palette of crimson, violet, and fuchsia, the collection brought this narrative home with undeniable flair.

Blending traditional heritage with a modern aesthetic, the collection took the audience on a journey starting from India’s sacred landscapes before drifting towards the vibrant, blue-green tropical waters of Antigua and the Caribbean. Rather than relying on traditional bridal rulebooks, Masaba Gupta reimagined wedding wear through a personal lens, crafting an optimistic showcase designed to celebrate a modern woman who carries her culture forward on her own terms.

The collection opened with a serene, minimalist palette of white, ivory, and beige, defining the first sequence of looks through sharp, tailored layering. Veteran runway icon Carol Gracias kicked off the show in a black anarkali set paired with a sharp, gold and ivory jacket featuring an embroidered trail, and carrying a black briefcase embellished with a bejewelled map of India.

As the music shifted, the collection transitioned into warm, sun-drenched destination-wear built with soft pinks, marigold oranges, and bright yellows – ideal for a haldi ceremony or festive brunch. Perfectly complemented by fine pieces from Indriya Jewellery, these sets featured breezy jackets layered over structured bralettes, fluid dhotis, sheer kurtis, and flowy capes that offered movement and effortless ease.

The showcase swiftly moved into playful resort bridal sets, seamlessly integrating tropical motifs like palm trees and pineapples alongside handcrafted Indian metallic zari and gota embroidery. Each ensemble playfully broke traditional wedding rules by seamlessly pairing casual street-style pieces like an embellished graphic T-shirt directly over a heavily embroidered lehenga skirt.

Adding to the spectacle, 90s supermodel icon Madhu Sapre made a grand return to the runway after nearly a decade, strutting in a regal red ensemble detailed with golden motifs and iconic headwear.

With Chardi Kala, Masaba didn’t just launch a bridal line; she redefined how contemporary Indian couture should feel. By stripping away stiffness and replacing it with pure, joyous individuality, the House of Masaba delivered a powerful celebration of heritage made for real life.
