If you’ve ever looked at traditional bridal wear and thought it felt less like a dream outfit and more like a heavy, predictable uniform, Gaurav Gupta’s Light Song is the ultimate reset. Exhibited at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre, this 70-look celestial space opera completely rewrote the rules of wedding couture – trading stiff, suffocating fabrics for pure, fluid energy.
The collection is a narrative that plays with light and shadow in three distinct phases, making it a masterclass in fashion storytelling.
Light Song opens by dropping us straight into Lunar, a segment dedicated entirely to the divine feminine. The theme follows midnight blues, dusty greys, and icy powder blues shaped into fluid drapes that look like liquid moonlight. Over 100 artisans spent hours replicating crater textures and scattering 20,000 crystals across the fabric, reviving house-signature bugle beads that catch the light from every single angle.
Then comes Solar, which flips the script to honour the divine masculine with a nod to the Konark Sun Temple. This segment drops five brand-new contemporary bridal lehengas drenched in custom metallic brocades, molten crystal embroidery, and heavy, jewellery-inspired embellishments that feel both ancient and futuristic.
The finale, Cosmic Union, melts the sun and moon together in a sea of ivory, pearl, and soft white. Gupta cleverly bridges his own history here, remixing a traditional chikankari concept inspired by a 2006 Deepika Padukone saree alongside his modern Solstice Lace.
Even the menswear didn’t play it safe, moving away from boring ceremonial silhouettes into custom jacquards featuring Pegasus motifs, kaleidoscopic embroidery, and sharp sherwanis.
Concluding the night, Ananya Panday walked out in a bridal look constructed from 5,000 hand-cut Camellia petals, pearls, and crystals – a piece that took 30 artisans a staggering 1,500 hours to build.
What makes this collection a true cultural moment isn’t just the clothes – it’s how it orchestrated a historic return of runway royalty. Breaking the predictability of modern typecasting, 1990s supermodels Mehr Jesia and Feroze Gujral stepped back onto the ramp, injecting the show with the raw energy and runway majesty of golden-era fashion. Alongside veteran model Lakshmi Rana, their presence grounded Gupta’s cosmic fantasy in true, timeless runway authority.
