Your Time To Glory

With the advent of genderless clothing, style and aesthetic, it was only a matter of time before one realised it’s, in fact, your personality that is exuded through the pieces you don and nothing else. Take a trip with us through the finest extras of the season that shall uplift your wardrobe seamlessly, one watch at a time.

Jake Gyllenhal

Back in the day, the art of wearing fine jewellery and watches was marked as a way to showcase wealth and honour. Today, however, the act has been elevated to operate as a mode of self-expression. Did you know that you can actually read the mood of a person by analysing their look? Think about it, someone you know, who never misses a beat, is always on time, perhaps had one bad morning and forgot to wear his watch, and his entire day goes for a toss. This isn’t because he wouldn’t know the time (his phone will do the needful) but it’s because he wouldn’t feel like himself without his trusted sidekick -his watch.

While it’s no surprise that a watch is a man’s best friend, it’s the little nuances of the piece that tie in with his character. Some gravitate to certain pieces for the look, others make the purchase as an investment, some use the complication to their advantage and everyone else just buys it because he likes it (and that is okay!).

There is always plenty of speculation about what one should buy. I, on the other hand, just believe that what you truly need to ask yourself is ‘why’ you want a particular watch? Is it for work? Is it the style? Is it the label? Is it an investment? Is it to mark an occasion? Think of your purpose and your watch will literally walk to you. We took the liberty of delving into a few key watches of the season that shall perhaps help you narrow down your wishlist a little further.

Watch
FOR THE OFFICE-GOER

Opt for the unexpected Rolex – Cellini Moonphase. Unlike its bracelet-laden counterparts, the Rolex Cellini Moonphase comes with a quintessential leather strap. The easy and comfortable 39-mm dial sits well on the wrist, adding the perfect touch of dressiness without stealing the whole show. Needless to say, this watch transforms from the boardroom to an evening out with ease, and looks as good with a white shirt as it does with a tuxedo. Add a pair of cufflinks – MONTBLANC’s StarWalker stainless steel ones match perfectly – to finish off with finesse.

FOR THE JET-SETTER

Nothing spells love for the skies quite like an IWC creation. The label’s Pilot watches have been around since 1904, and over the past century and a half they have only gotten better. Their attention to detail has swept the world of aviation and horology by storm, much like their latest creation – the Big Pilot Right-Hander edition. Traditionally, it is believed that watches are to be worn on the left hand, keeping your right arm free from overt care and available for any kind of activity. This leaves out a large chunk of people who are left-handed to begin with; IWC took it upon themselves to address this and crafted a Big Pilot that can be worn on the right hand with the crown resting on the left, changing the movement a full 180-degree to incorporate seamless functioning. Pair this with a leather bracelet to complete the ruggedness and raw energy.

FOR THE CITY-DWELLER

Exude a chill attitude with the ease of a bracelet watch, our pick – Santos de Cartier. The classic square dial has been donned by the century’s dandiest people and now it’s your turn. Available in a plethora of sizes, styles, and finishes, we are crushing on the classic Santos de Cartier as seen on American actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The piece comes with a white dial and an interchangeable strap, allowing the wearer to switch easily. The unmissable eight screws command the limelight, marking their true Cartier-esque quality. For a little extra bling, don’t be afraid to add a ring. We trust the Link Rings by Katrina Vrakas that take their inspiration from the iconic watch bracelets to up the ante.

FOR THE MARINER

Stricken by the shores and the depth of the ocean, any nautical amorist knows that Panerai is the ultimate watch for the sea. Stamped by the Italian Navy, this brand has been a go-to for those enthused by all things driven by the sea. Almost all their creations promise a notable water-resistant feature, and our latest crush is the Luminor Marina eSteel. Consisting of 58.5 per cent recyclable materials, this watch assures the same robust appeal with a sustainable backing. The 44-mm dial size can be romanced in three shades – blue, green and grey – and has an impressive three-day power reserve. Pair this with a Saint Laurent’s Silver Short necklace to offset the new eSteel.

Watches

FOR THE COLLECTOR

With a long-standing tradition of keeping your timepieces safe, back in the 1930s the British Army officers raised an issue with keeping their watch safe whilst playing polo. Jaeger-LeCoultre came to the rescue and developed a unique model known as the Reverso. The now iconic watch has the ability to be flipped, safeguarding the watch while the wearer is immersed in a hostile activity. Back in the day it was meant for polo players but today it’s more of a keepsake. The blank canvas that lies behind has evolved as a playground for messages, insignias and even another watch altogether. This little piece of history is one that can truly be made your own. Modelled after the original, the latest Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Tourbillon lends itself as the perfect addition to a collector’s reservoir. The perfect balance of the old and the new, the watch is limited to only 50 pieces and is definitely one to have and hold. Stud the Jack de Boucheron brooch on a lapel to match its one-of-a-kind appeal.
