Transformed by the Ocean ft Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna

Although the ocean remains one of the most unexplored places on the planet, what we do know of its vastness is the quiet beauty it conceals beneath the surface. Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna capture one evocative facet of this mystery in their latest couture collection, Abyssal.

On what sparked the concept of the collection, the designer duo shared, “We were drawn to the idea of depth, not as darkness, but as quiet intensity. The ocean became a reference point because of how it holds both light and darkness at the same time. That duality felt very relevant to our vision for the season.”

A study of stillness beneath the surface, the collection explores what exists beyond immediate visibility. Layering became the primary location through which this idea unfolded. Sheer fabrics are placed over one another, allowing light to filter through, refracting gently against pearls and sequins. “The ornamentation had to feel embedded,” they explain, “almost like a rare treasure resting within the ocean floor.” Nothing feels excessive; instead, embellishment appears discovered, as though revealed over time.

Binding the concept together is a soothing ombré palette that moves through abyssal blues, frost whites, and charcoals – each holding an emotional undercurrent of its own. “There’s an immersive quality to the palette of Abyssal, from the blue tones to ivory. There is a sense of depth and calm rather than spectacle. It’s an atmosphere you step into, rather than something that demands attention.” The hues do not scream; they envelop.

Surface detailing – pearls, crystals, and tonal embroidery – sits seamlessly within the silhouettes, never overpowering their architectural integrity. The duo’s signature precision remains intact, but here it is softened. Ornamentation becomes structural, absorbed into the garment’s framework rather than interrupting it. This balance between control and fluidity defines the collection’s masterful confluence.

The technical demands of such restraint, however, were immense. Multiple layers of translucency create optical illusions that leave no room for error. “When fabric is sheer and layered, even the smallest miscalculation becomes visible,” they note. “The real challenge was keeping the garment light while still giving it structure.”

One design where this masterful precision is most evident is the Stillness Saree, its cording layers forming a pallu that cascades like underwater coral in motion. Each strand is placed with exacting care, creating the illusion of movement within stillness – a paradox that lies at the heart of the collection.

If there is a single piece that encapsulates the philosophy of Abyssal, it is the Moonray Gleam lehenga. Structured contours meet layered navy tones, while a restrained shimmer appears woven into the very fabric of the garment. Strength and softness coexist – much like the ocean itself.

Positioned around the moments surrounding the ceremony rather than the ceremony alone, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna’s Abyssal celebrates the modern couture wearer – informed, self-aware, and seeking unmistakable individuality. In these in-between spaces, away from formalities and rituals, the design mavens’ masterpieces find their depth.

“Earlier, our philosophy was about establishing a voice. Now it’s about protecting and evolving it.”

“We’ve learned that consistency doesn’t mean repetition, it means deepening your language.”
