Throwback Time: Best Red Carpet Moments from Cannes Film Festival

It’s almost that time of the year when prominent personalities from across the globe descend upon the South of France in the most stunning couture confections. The Cannes Film Festival is as much a fashion extravaganza as a prestigious cinema carnival. Divas from Bollywood have been gracing the Cannes Film Festival red carpet since over a decade winning the fashion game appearance by appearance. While we anticipate what’s in store this year, here’s a roundup of iconic looks of Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Sonam Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut that made the world go ooh-la-la.

Deepika Padukone as the Epitome of Lustre

Y’all will agree that Deepika had mastered the red carpet by her second outing at the festival when she made a scene-stealing red carpet entry donning a bold dark purple Marchesa Notte one shoulder ensemble accented in semi-sheer shimmer and floral embellishments looking like a lustrous vision. Deep red lips, centre-parted hair with beach waves anchored the look perfectly. Jimmy Choo number and jewels by DE Grisogono complemented the look with an elevated oomph.

One of the most iconic looks from all her stints at Festival De Cannes, Deepika’s bold choice for the 2018 red carpet created an envious flutter. The diva flexed her edgier side to match the cinematic spectacle in a pink Ashi Studio butterfly-like origami customized couture masterpiece. With smokey eyes and textured high bun, she paired the number with emerald jewels from Lorraine Schwartz and metallic heels by Aquazzura to win the game.

Aishwarya Rai as a Fairytale Figure

Having won the Miss World crowd years ago, Aishwarya Rai hasn’t yet stopped waving and showering flying kisses giving us those princess-y vibes. Her most definitive princess moment arrived with her red carpet appearance at the Cannes in 2017. She dazzled every onlooker amidst the sea of sexy, body-hugging and slit gowns adorning a Cinderella-esque ice blue Michael Cinco Couture gown. The icy blue off shoulder gown was embedded with intricate beads and silver leaves embroidered all over the voluminous ballroom-worthy skirt. Slick straight open hair and minimal baubles decked up her look perfectly.

Being a regular at the annual film festival, Aishwarya held no qualms to ditch the unwritten rule of ‘no red on red’. Taking a rebel move under critical scrutiny, she sashayed the red carpet wearing a red multi-layered Ralph & Russo gown transforming into a fiery red queen. The torso of the magnificent multi-layered off-shoulder silhouette was embedded with tonal stones in a floral pattern. She made a perfect choice to ornate the look with chandelier diamond earrings and rubies accentuating her class and sass.

Sonam Kapoor as the Trailblazer of Red Carpets

A true epitome of a glam Goddess, Sonam Kapoor’s appearances at The Cannes Film Festival are amongst the most-anticipated ones. Last year, Sonam landed in the French coastal within a week of her marriage to reinstate her red carpet stunner title. Accentuating her new bridal glow, she adorned a custom white Ralph & Russo lehenga looking like a pristine vision. The British designer duo created their first-ever lehenga for Sonam customizing it with an opulent trail and tonal embellishments. She went the quintessential Indian way decorating her braid with Amrapali Jewels.

Sonam Kapoor, the muse & Ralph & Russo- the couturiers have together mastered the white on red carpet look with their penchant for glamour.  Sonam Kapoor dolled up in a dreamy white gown by the designers that dazzled muted embellishments and created a dramatic flutter with its heavenly cape. She completed her look with no-fuss straight hair, understated makeup that gave her aura of refined severity.

Kangana Ranaut as the Best Debutant

A bonafide queen of glam, Kangana Ranaut took over the Cannes gala last year channelling her desi vibes with a vintage dictum. She chose a dazzling black saree by Sabyasachi for her first appearance looking counterbalancing divinity and glamour perfectly. Her bouffant hair and winged eyeliner gave a retro twist to the French Riviera. Sabyasachi customized a black batua and a ‘teenmaniya’ choker necklace with uncut diamonds, pearls and emeralds to complement the old-world Indian charm.

Unlike her contemporaries, Kangana gave those ultra-feminine gowns a miss turning into a fiery rockstar to nail her red carpet look. She was styled in a Nedo By Nedret Taciroglu catsuit. The daring neckline and form-fitting silhouette of the catsuit featured frivolous embellishments that dazzled from every angle. Her naturally curly tresses and smokey eye complemented her eccentric demeanour. Having lit the red carpet in her first appearance itself, she certainly seems well-equipped to win over with upcoming looks as well.
