The Summer We Turned Over The Colour Palette

Summer, in fashion, has dealt with its fair share of clichés – it instantly brings to mind powder blues, blush pinks, softened yellows, and airy lilacs – an aesthetic flooding runways, racks, and summer moodboards every year. This time, the palette has opened up, and there’s a lot more at play. Pastels are still around, but rarely shouldering all the weight alone.

What emerges is a more open approach to colour – one that moves between bold and subtle, familiar and unexpected, rather than choosing just one direction.

Back To The Basics: Primary Colours

This summer marks a return to primary colours – reds, yellows, and blues cutting cleanly through the softness that has long defined summer. Red arrives with a bold, unapologetic presence, capturing attention from the very first glance. The resurgence of yellow is just as noticeable, but it’s not the familiar butter yellow that had everyone in its grip last spring – it feels brighter and more direct, like a burst of fresh energy. Blue plays a more grounding role, balancing the palette with depth – giving it structure without weighing it down.

There’s a clarity to how these colours are expressed. Rather than being diffused or blended into prints and gradients, they come through clean and confident – making the overall look feel sharper, with just the perfect amount of edge.

Exploring The In-Between: Shades in Flux

Along with the return of primary colours, there’s a clear shift toward the in-between. Not quite soft, not completely bold, these shades sit in the middle, bringing nuance to the scene.

Shades like icy grey keep things cool and grounded, adding a quiet balance to brighter tones. Millennial pink moves toward a less saccharine approach – more composed and deliberate than ever, with styling choices that lend it a refined edge, reading as more powerful than its playful counterparts. Green is also getting its due, gracing red carpets with chartreuse or emerald tones that add richness and a touch of elevated glam.

This shift hasn’t come out of nowhere – it’s been building over time. Pinterest Predicts 2026 captured this aptly, pointing to a growing pull towards nostalgia as a source of comfort, one that people keep returning to again and again. At the same time, it reflects a more open approach to style – where familiarity is welcomed, but never at the cost of individuality.

There’s a clear return to instinct. Instead of following a fixed palette, people are leaning towards what works for them on a more personal level. These choices feel less about getting it “right” and more about making it feel right.

These shifts collectively redefine the summer palette, setting in motion a renewed sense of freedom – to move between the familiar and the unexpected. While some choices feel instinctive and others more surprising, it’s this contrast that makes the palette so compelling, leaving room for new and unexpected possibilities. And this summer, it’s about exploring them all.
