Over the decades, Formula 1 helmet designs have changed from simple colour combinations to works of art. Some honour their national pride, some celebrate career milestones, while a few have become synonyms with the drivers who wore them.

Sir Jackie Stewart (1970)
Well before the custom race-by-race designs became the norm, Sir Jackie Stewart created the first truly recognizable helmets. His immaculate white helmet, with a Royal Stewart tartan band, pays tribute to his Scottish roots and quickly became one of the most recognizable designs in motorsports.
Lewis Hamilton Japan Grand Prix 2023
For the 2023 Japan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton made his helmet into a work of art. Created in collaboration with world-renowned Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, the metallic silver finish, purple accents and mirrored visor reflected Hamilton’s passion for fashion and the influence of Japan on contemporary design.
Lando Norris Italian Grand Prix 2020
Known for never taking himself too seriously, Lando Norris arrived at Monza wearing Formula 1’s most talked-about helmets. Inspired by pizza, the playful design featured a margarita on one side and pepperoni on the other, a light-hearted tribute to Italy that instantly became a fan favourite.
Alex Albon British Grand Prix 2022
Alex Albon’s 2022 Silverstone helmet honored his pets waiting for him at home. It showcased cartoon illustrations of all ten of his animals, making it one of the most personal and touching helmet stories on the Formula 1 grid.
Valtteri Bottas Pre-Season Testing 2023
The playful design was illustrated by his partner, professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, adding a personal touch to Formula 1’s most memorable modern helmets.
Daniel Ricciardo Australian Grand Prix 2024
Returning home for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo unveiled a helmet designed by Melbourne artist Rosie Pettenon, the winner of an Optus design competition for emerging creatives. Inspired by the theme of Australian Optimism, the artwork featured native flora including eucalyptus leaves, golden wattle and kangaroo paw, alongside hidden kangaroo, a rural windmill and Ricciardo’s signature Honey Badger motif. Beyond celebrating his home country, the helmet also supported a greater cause with proceeds from the post-race auction donated to Save the children Australia, where Ricciardo serves as an ambassador.
Max Verstappen Dutch Grand Prix 2023
Whenever F1 returns to Zandvoort, Max Verstappen’s special helmets are a deal. They have designs that show Dutch pride and the famous ‘Orange Army’ fans. The designs really capture the excitement of his home crowd.
Michael Schumacher
To celebrate twenty years since his Formula 1 debut at Spa-Francorchamps, Michael Schumacher used a gold helmet in the 2011 Belgian Grand Prix. This was different from his colours and was to mark how long he had been racing and the circuit where his F1 journey started.
