Shona Barua, Associate – Fashion Merchandising

‘Bagging’ The Best!

It is no secret that accessories are the ‘make & break’ element of any look. Picking the right ones is no cakewalk either. Shona though, from our Merchandising team seems to have bagged the perfect ones – quite literally.

Seen flaunting a belt bag from Papa Don’t Preach by Shubhika on multiple occasions in multiple ways, she knows that the key to any style buy is its versatility. This one demanded to be experimented with to the fullest!

“I think this bag has been the most fun to style. This could go with Indian and Western outfits and brighten any ordinary look,” she says when asked what she liked about the waist-candy! “It has 2 detachable bags and a belt. This helps me style it in so many different ways. I have worn this as a belt, across my chest, around my waist and even attached one of the smaller bags to my jeans loop!”

“A bold accessory like a bag or shoe has completely changed my entire look.”

Another one of her purchases that seems like an absolute head-turner is the fanny pack from Payal Singhal. It also scores high points for its all-rounder nature. Fashion enthusiasts or not; we’re familiar with the fact that this 80s-inspired trend has been all over our social media feeds since it made a comeback in 2019.

Shona wore hers for her best friend’s reception. It was a black-tie theme. She also carried it for her sister’s wedding in Goa, styling it with glamorous gowns both times around.

“I love this bag because it’s quirky and colourful. I have always loved fanny packs as I think they are so stylish, yet convenient,” she says.

We have to agree! Fanny packs serve more than just one purpose, so it’s no wonder that they’re so popular among Gen-Z and Millennials.

Her Style Hack

“I frequently wear black when I go out. A bold accessory like a bag or shoe has completely changed my entire look. Thus, according to me accessories are an extremely important addition to any outfit.”

Maya Roy, Senior Fashion Merchandiser

Simply Elegant!

The celebrations leading up to the big day are just as important as the main wedding ceremony! So, it’s just as essential to choose the right outfits for the occasion.

“Fashion should always reflect your personality.”

Maya, Senior Fashion Merchandiser at Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop, wore a radiant and regal toned lehenga adorned with beautiful botanical motifs, from Pink Peacock Couture for her Sangeet function. The colours, which were customised by her, were perfect for the high-energy nature of the revelries. The jewellery she paired with it stands out the most, not just for its instant charm but also for what it means.

“Honestly the jewellery came as a complete surprise! I had opted for a simple and elegant diamond set to go with the garment. But as I was getting ready, my mother-in-law came up to me and handed over her jewellery set which was an heirloom from her ancestors. The best part was that it went perfectly well with the outfit and it was too beautiful to not wear.”

Family heirlooms have been the hero pieces at weddings since time immemorial. The fact that she chose to trade her previous pairings for the timeless masterpieces is just another testament to their importance in every Indian bride’s life. The overall understatedness of the look is what we loved the most!

Her Style Mantra

Ankita Bedi, AVP Marketing

The Dreamiest Summer Bride!

When we think of ‘summer’, we’re instantly reminded of bright, happy colours and fun memories. We got the same feeling after just one look at Ankita’s pre-wedding lehengas!

My favourite part about summer weddings is that I could move beyond the reds and maroons and go more on the pastel colour palette. There is so much one can pick, in terms of styling for a summer wedding look – tropical, bling, sorbet hues, bohemian and really experiment a lot as a modern bride,” muses Ankita.

For her intimate Haldi ceremony, she chose a radiant & striking Abhinav Mishra lehenga adorned with mirror work. She was going for an elegant and classic look, and felt that an outfit from the designer would add a jolly element to the ceremony. The couple decided to turn it into a lively dancing event to make up for not being able to host a cocktail party or Sangeet function.

“There is so much one can pick, in terms of styling for a summer wedding look…”

“Keeping this in mind, I wanted to pick light colours like Pinks and Yellows, as it was a day function but at the same time I was looking for something more than a haldi outfit, as this was the event where all the fun was going to happen. So I decided on this beautiful pink and gold lehenga by Abhinav Mishra and paired it with Gold and floral jewellery,” she says about the choice and styling.

An intimate Pooja at home saw Ankita in an ASAL by Abu Sandeep number. She loved how it was absolutely grand in appeal with the way it was structured, and yet, was extremely lightweight.

“I did not want to pick something very heavy as I was anyway going to be doing that for my main wedding day functions. So this definitely was a comfortable, easy to manage and the right choice given the occasion. The frill detailing on the dupatta lent a very contemporary element to the outfit. I paired it with statement Kundan Earrings and a delicate haath phool,” she adds.

We think both the outfits definitely stole the show, and we’re still in awe!

Style Advice For Brides-To-Be

“I think before you start choosing the outfit, you should know the kind of bridal look you want to achieve, whether – delicate, traditional, modern. I had gone over tons of images of real brides and picked a few of the inspirations which I loved the most and then started looking for my outfit on those lines.

Another thing is placing your outfit order in time – given the lockdown and pandemic, a lot of the craftsmen and businesses were affected, so it was essential to give the designer at least a good 3 and half months to deliver the outfit, given the possible delays.

“Before you start choosing the outfit, you should know the kind of bridal look you want to achieve.”

Also, brides always have a lot of customizations that they require for their bridal outfit. So in such cases, to avoid the back and forth, it’s best to back everything up with pictures, preferably from the same designer’s collection to avoid delays with alterations. I remember, I wanted to change the neck pattern of my blouse for my Abhinav Mishra outfit. So I selected a different pattern from the same designer’s collection, to reduce the time and make it easier for the designer to understand my preference”

Yoshika Gurnani, Senior Associate – Online Merchandising

Fuss-Free & Fabulous!

More often than not, we let trends guide our style choices. The pandemic though, is responsible for putting comfort at the forefront of all our fashion decisions. It has also made us more mindful! Now, before hitting ‘purchase’, we tend to picture ourselves wearing a certain piece not once, but multiple times. If we can’t, then it doesn’t qualify.

For Yoshika too, these attributes play a huge role.

“Comfort is above trend & brand name. I love comfortable & flowy silhouettes, it helps in boosting my confidence,” she says.

“Invest in styles you can wear all around the year.”

She chose to don a Kurta from Vvani by Vani Vats for an intimate Lohri function at her cousin’s house. It features embroidery that is subtle yet eye-catching. The palette is pleasing regardless of the season, and is a surefire festive go-to.

We asked her what made it a hit for her, to which she said, “As per the Lohri tradition, people are supposed to move around the fire & put sweets and other things in it. All this can be chaotic and unsafe with a lot of people involved. So I chose a garment without a dupatta or stole yet ethnic looking so as to avoid any accidents.”

The flared hem is her favourite part about the outfit, and it has got to be ours too! It does bring in a fun factor, elevating one’s festive mood.

Words Of Wisdom From Her

“Rather than spending on big brands, invest in styles that are classics and can be worn all around the year.”
