Quaint & Charming: Pernia’s Pop-Up Studio X Cushy

The flagship store of Pernia’s Pop-Up Studio at Kala Ghoda hosted an exclusive collection launch of an upcoming designer label from Dubai- Cushy. Cushy presented its Spring/Summer ’19 collection ‘Parizah’ as an ode to modern women. The collection featured breezy fusion styles, billowy gowns and lehengas in eclectic hues ranging from pastels to striking jewel tones perfect for summer weddings.

A flock of bloggers including Masoom Minawala of Miss Style Fiesta, Tina of The Image Code, Megha Bajaj, Maia Sethna, Neha Meghwani came to catch the first look of the collection. For the decor of the preview event, the collection’s vision was translated into a floral setup with vintage telephone booth and bicycle installations that instantly reminisced old-school charm. The collection will be available to shop exclusively at Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop online and its stores. Amidst a busy day, we had a quick chat with the talented new designer Aasma of Cushy to know more about her brand.

Tell us something about your journey and how the brand started

The story of how we started is actually quite funny. Back then at our college, we had our final showcase project where we had to incorporate our design into a passion. My passion has only and always been designing. So, when I got an opportunity to display it I started with developing prints, illustrating to design a modern and quirky collection. Seven months ago, I decided to introduce my brand Cushy on a bigger level.

What is your inspiration behind the collection?

The inspiration behind the collection epitomizes the journey of a modern-day woman and her many moods. It could be playful, bold, cheerful, elegant. All these elements are incorporated into the collection. Colours range from bright pastels to enticing jewel tones. It embodies the chaotic life of a woman. The theme is significantly vintage European. We’ve used a lot of ruffles, pleats, tiers and draping to style the silhouettes. The embroidery is kept tonal and minimal which has been our signature style since the foundation.

Any style tip you’d advice for summer wedding looks?

I think one should opt for breezy silhouettes that are easy to pull off. Draped gowns with lighter layers are exactly what we’ve designed for summer wedding soirees. Dainty frills, drapes and jackets are perfect for outdoor wedding destinations. But I’d also say classic lehenga is a must-have to wear for at least one function.

What styles would you recommend for a modern bride’s trousseau?

I think a must-have would definitely be a bold cocktail gown in an oxblood colour. Secondly and most importantly, your trousseau is never complete without a couple of lehengas. A lavender pastel shade or a monotone ivory ensemble would be perfect. For our ‘Parizah’ collection, we’ve paired lehengas with blazers and ditched the dupattas to give a more modern appeal. You can choose it for a sundowner mehendi or pre-wedding get-togethers, beachside wedding festivities.

Your favourite style icon you look forward to dressing up for a red carpet?

I would love to dress Deepika Padukone. I think her statuesque frame can pull off anything graceful. I would give her beautiful long trail gown in a toffee, ivory or blush colour. I think that would look great on her.

Tell us something about your association with Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop

We’ve been with Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop since the beginning. It is a perfect platform for upcoming designers to introduce themselves. I love the way Pernia’s Pop-Up Shop is hosting pop-ups and previews. It’s working out great for me!
