On the glamorous evening of March 9, the world witnessed a breathtaking fusion of tradition and elegance on the prestigious stage of Miss World 2024. A historic moment unfolded as the 13 fast-track winners walked the ramp adorning magnificent Indian silhouettes meticulously crafted for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut show, “Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar”. Joining them was the stellar cast from the OTT series: Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sharmin Segal. These 20 captivating divas, each a vision of grace, walked in costumes from the inaugural song, ‘Sakal Ban’, offering a tantalising glimpse into India’s rich cultural tapestry and the director’s immersive narrative universe.
The storyline dates back to the 1940s pre-independence era when the Tawaif culture peaked. The visionary director paid attention to every detail that went into making his dream project. The renowned designer duo Rimple and Harpreet, who worked in the director’s previous magnum opuses, were the creative geniuses behind the breathtaking ensembles of the over-the-top web series. Known for their heritage craftsmanship and using luxurious, vintage fabrics, these creative masterminds made exceptional masterpieces that highlighted the opulent tapestry of Indian artistry at its pinnacle. The captivating hues of springs, intricate floral patterns, and timeless embellishments add life to the director’s visual narrative. Complemented by time-tested jewellery, these ensembles serve as the final touch, adding the perfect punctuation to the overall aesthetic.
As we saw an exquisite array of shararas and ghararas adorned by Aditi Rao Hydari and other contestants, these silhouettes draw inspiration from English gowns tailored to the comfort of Indian begums. The sheer dupattas, adorned with mesmerising embroidery, epitomise feminine grace in its purest form. The design duo’s interpretation of the spring, infused with their signature style, seamlessly harmonises with the soul-stirring song from the series. Whether it’s the breathtaking lehengas worn by Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Shaikh or Manisha Koirala’s mesmerising saree, each ensemble exudes royalty and timelessness.
Each piece of jewellery adorning these fabulous divas pays homage to the bygone era. From uncut diamonds to the ageless elegance of pearls encrusted in earrings and necklaces, each adornment sets the perfect mood. The addition of captivating, colourful stones further enhances the ensemble’s allure. Among the contestants, while all looked exceptional, the opulent nose rings effortlessly stole the show. With the final touches of rings, bangles, mata-patti, and passa, each beauty transported the spectators back to the enchanting ambience of 1940s British Raj Lahore.
The jewels from “Heeramandi” that graced the Miss World stage created an unforgettable memory for a lifetime, where elegance seamlessly blended with India’s rich culture and history. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s knack for vintage, tradition and opulence, as showcased in his previous extravagant projects, is reflected once again in “Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar,” offering a compelling glimpse of the director’s adoration for grandeur. As the renowned stage shimmered with these treasures, it became a testament to the enduring allure of Bhansali’s cinematic vision, promising a legacy of beauty and splendor for generations to come.
