Corsets and Couture

Modern weddings are nothing short of fairytales – a gala of luxurious textiles and striking silhouettes that are a confluence of traditions and global influences. Amongst many new-age bridal trends, the corset has risen to fame with its myriad variations to fit into the Indian context. Originally invented as body shapers concealed under gowns that compromised women’s comfort, corsets are now tailored to offer optimum comfort and impeccable style to the wearer.

Even though corset girdles have a painful history associated with enhancing the female form, today, they have become a flattering high-fashion statement across the globe. The origins of the corset can be traced back to 15th century Italy, gaining immense popularity during the Victorian era, 16th century onwards. Evidence suggests that corsets at the time were made of whalebone and even steel to cinch the waistline. This painful ordeal finally came to an end around the 20th century.

Corsetry entered into luxury fashion in the 1970s with Vivienne Westwood’s historic punk aesthetic. Her take on corsets empowered women rather than limiting them. The following decade saw Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler incorporate corsets into their designs. Finally, when Madonna flaunted a pink satin corset by Jean Paul Gaultier on stage during her 1991 Blond Ambition World Tour, it sent waves across the fashion world.

The Indian Renaissance of Corsets

The Indian Renaissance of Corsets

While corsets have always been a prominent part of Western culture, they reached the Indian subcontinent rather recently. Revered designer Suneet Verma was the first one to bring in the reign of corsets in Indian fashion through his 1992 collection. Master couturier Tarun Tahiliani is another force of fashion who has reimagined the corset in myriad forms, amalgamating traditional embroideries and textiles.

Keeping the essence of the historic lacey corsets, Roseroom by Isha Jajodia creates designs that bring together French sophistication and contemporary Indian sensibilities. Delicate laces and threadwork define the label’s corset designs. As a result of its versatility, corsetry has become a brand-new addition to the Indian wear closet of today’s style connoisseurs. Other leading labels like Shantnu & Nikhil, JADE by Monica and Karishma, Gaurav Gupta, Dolly J, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna are few of the others who have put their own spin on the silhouette.

The Contemporary Appeal

The Contemporary Appeal

From Shibani Dandekar’s bridal mermaid-style lehenga with corset details to Deepika Padukone’s bold post-wedding Sabyasachi creations, corsets in Indian fashion underscore a seamless blend of heritage and innovation.

Though corsets were historically rooted in shaping silhouettes with little regard for comfort, they have evolved into a celebrated fashion element that balances form and freedom. Today, designers view corsetry with innovation, crafting designs that prioritise comfort and versatility. This allows modern brides to embrace the corset not as a restrictive garment but as a statement piece that elevates their style. From intricately embroidered lehenga blouses to contemporary saree corsets, these designs reflect a perfect marriage of tradition and modernity. Brides, now, view corsets as an opportunity to experiment with bold, unique silhouettes on their big day, embracing a trend that celebrates individuality and elegance in equal measure.
