Carried Through Time

An unsung hero in the glamorous realm of fashion, here’s how exceptional artists and time sewed handbags into masterpieces we know today.

For everyone, bags were mere accessories created to carry everyday essentials, but as societies progressed, so did the bags. We owe it to design visionaries who took a serious interest in these quintessential add-ons; today, bags have taken different forms like tote, clutch, crossbody, sling, shoulder, and many more. Fashion wizard Michael Kors once famously said, ‘I always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.’ And indeed, it does seal the final deal for every ensemble. But how did these handbags go through such a massive transformation?

Back in the day, these stylish companions were called pockets and were simply made to carry coins. Later, around the 1400s, the small pockets became synonymous with high status and affluence. Men and women carried bejewelled pockets made of expensive silks. Although these pouches were on-trend during the era, they took a setback due to the rise of in-built pockets in apparel. But in the 1800s, handbags re-emerged stronger, with innovative designs that could be held in hand and were compartmentalised. This began an era of sculpted finesse that became a canvas of artistic expression

By the mid-20th century, bags had become a part of people’s personal style, and renowned design houses like Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, and many more saw this as an opportunity to offer unique and iconic designs that still reflected the brand’s distinct design language. The idea of bags as a fashion accessory was further popularised when noted celebrities were seen carrying them in films. The iconic Sex and The City scene perfectly captured this sentiment when a Hermès salesman corrected Samantha Jones, stating, “It’s not just a bag – it’s a Birkin!”

Today, it’s more accurate than ever. For luxury connoisseurs, bags are expressions of themselves. Over time, artists have deepened their understanding of luxury and the power of craftsmanship, going all out to create masterpieces that bring their vision to life. Case in point: Isha Ambani Piramal’s Chanel Doll Bag, that stole the spotlight at the MET Gala 2023. Handbags have turned into a strong statement of individuality, and designers continue to amplify this with their creative brilliance.

Alongside their over-the-top creations, these renowned designers have crafted enduring pieces that consistently top every fashion enthusiast’s list, reimagining them without compromising their true essence. The Dior Saddle Bag was initially introduced in 1999 as a part of John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection. The bag gained widespread recognition after appearing in Sex and the City, carried by Sarah Jessica Parker. In 2018, the fashion house’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, brought back the iconic style with modern updates while preserving its essence. Another piece that stood the test of time is the Lady Dior Bag, created in honour of Princess Diana, which was gifted to her by the First Lady of France in 1995. Now, the bag comes in different sizes and colours, keeping its timeless charm intact.

As we reach the final page of this narrative, the story doesn’t end here. Handbags have become an indispensable part of modern fashion, elevating wardrobes all year round. What started as a mere utility in the past has now become an emblem of styling. They don’t just carry our essentials but our identity, dreams, and aspirations. While this journey may pause here, it continues beyond these pages.
