Dayena Erappa, the former athlete and Miss India 2016 contestant, is amongst the most acclaimed names in the Indian fashion industry. Renowned for her striking features and a successful modeling career, she shares insights into her life beyond the runway in a candid chat with First Look.

FL: Outside of the fashion world, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your free time?

DE: Beyond the runway, I nurture my well-being with runs, dance classes, and simple joys like nature strolls, reading, and travel. Another one of my favourites is enjoying nostalgic movie marathons with friends. Art is my hidden passion, specifically doodling and sketching. It adds tranquillity to my moments of solace. When I want to be social, I cherish spending quality time with close friends and family. All of these activities have become my mini escapes that bring balance to the fast-paced life I live.

FL: Are there any specific books, movies, or artists that inspire you and influence your personal style or creative expression?

DE: Oh, absolutely! There are a lot of them that inspire me. Books like ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ by Mitch Albom and ‘My Gita’ by Devdutt Pattanaik have, in many ways, helped shape my thinking. As for movies, it has to be the iconic ones like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Good Will Hunting’ and ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’; all of them have left a profound impact on my perspective towards life and people.

FL: Given your experiences in different parts of the world, do you have a favourite travel destination, and what makes it special to you?

DE: It’s therapeutic for me to explore diverse cultures and meet different people through my travels. If there is one place I have completely fallen in love with through this process, it is Italy. The art, architecture, culture, fashion, food and pristine beaches captivate me. Another cherished spot for me is Cuba. I love the incredibly laid-back life it has, the nostalgic 80s feel to it and its vibrant culture. The picturesque views of the city contribute to Cuba’s unique charm, making it an unforgettable travel experience for me every time.

running, and meditation are all things that keep me fit. These practices are more than just a routine; they have been my lifelong companions for staying healthy and happy.

FL: Being in the public eye, how do you maintain a sense of privacy in your personal life?

DE: Balancing fame and privacy is an art. It is crucial to share aspects of my journey with my fans while keeping certain moments private. I focus on authenticity, allowing people to see the real me without exposing every detail. This way, I connect with the audience genuinely while cherishing the personal aspects of my life away from the camera.

FL. With your extensive modelling career, are there specific fashion designers or brands that you admire and enjoy collaborating with the most?

DE: Throughout my modelling journey, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with incredible masterminds like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, Rahul Mishra, Tarun Tahiliani and many more. They all have a special place in my heart for their exquisite craftsmanship and unique styles. It’s these collaborations that have made my modelling career truly fulfilling.

FL: Fashion trends come and go. Is there a timeless fashion piece or style that you always find yourself drawn to, regardless of current trends?

DE: I’m consistently drawn to the timeless charm of a well-fitted denim paired with a crisp white shirt and a stylish blazer—a classic combination effortlessly blending casual and chic. I also adore hoop earrings for that perfect touch of elegance. The little black dress is another favourite that serves as a versatile staple in my wardrobe.
