Few designers have shaped Indian couture quite like JJ Valaya. Thirty-four years into his journey, the couturier continues to reinvent bridal dressing without losing sight of the signature craftsmanship that defines the House of Valaya. His latest collection, Siddi, unveiled at Hyundai India Couture Week 2026, was a testament to that enduring vision, weaving together history, identity and couture in true House of Valaya fashion.
Inspired by the Siddis of India, a community of African origin whose story has been shaped by centuries of cultural exchange across the Indian subcontinent, Siddi was less about recreating history and more about interpreting its spirit. Valaya transformed this rich narrative into creations that explored movement, memory, belonging and identity through the lens of modern Indian couture.
The collection moved effortlessly between opulent bridal lehengas, fluid saris, graceful anarkalis, embroidered sherwanis and impeccably tailored bandhgalas. While the unmistakable charm of the House of Valaya was hard to miss, every silhouette carried a renewed sense of lightness and modernity, allowing the story behind the collection to take centre stage.
A regal palette of antique gold,red, ivory, noir, champagne, sapphire blue, emerald green and earthy neutrals formed the foundation of the collection. Intricate zardozi, ari and dori embroidery, metallic threadwork and crystal embellishments elevated each look, while fluid proportions and sculpted silhouettes ensured the craftsmanship never overshadowed the wearer.
One of the most poignant moments of the showcase came in the form of a black-and-metallic bridal lehenga adorned with Valaya’s signature Shifting Leaves Chevron motif. Originally created for his daughter Hoorvi’s wedding, its runway debut transformed a deeply personal heirloom into a powerful expression of legacy, emotion and the enduring beauty of couture.
The menswear was equally compelling. Embroidered sherwanis, layered shawls and sharply tailored bandhgalas brought together ceremonial richness and contemporary precision. Ornate surface detailing met clean, structured tailoring, resulting in looks that felt both regal and remarkably relevant.
Despite its rich embellishment and luxurious finishes, Siddi was never about excess. Instead, it found beauty in restraint, balancing texture with geometry, ornamentation with proportion, and tradition with modernity. Jewelled lehengas, embroidered veils and flowing anarkalis brought drama to the runway, yet every look remained refined, considered and unmistakably contemporary.
With Siddi, JJ Valaya didn’t simply present another couture collection. He reaffirmed why, after 34 years, the House of Valaya continues to define Indian couture, creating pieces that honour heritage while speaking effortlessly to the brides and grooms of today.
