Very few designers succeed in delivering dynamic creations that not just pleases the eye but also feeds the curiosity of the audience. Over two decades of crafting couture, Amit Aggarwal basks in the glory of establishing an empire based on innovation and nuanced artisanship. In the Indian fashionscape where age-old crafts and techniques have always been lauded, Aggarwal has adeptly manipulated traditional styles with the help of futuristic fabrics and designs derived from scientific concepts. “Growing up in a family of engineers and scientists, my childhood was spent observing my father working on his engineering projects. I have always been greatly inspired by science, which is evident in my design ideology today,” expresses the designer.
This zest for science and structure strengthened further with the experiences Aggarwal gained while working with some of the industry’s leading labels. His early work life led him to create a unique design philosophy that is evident in his eponymous label, combining creativity, precision, and conscious practices. The three pillars of this philosophy are namely, “Emotion, evolution and eternity that forms the bedrock on which our brand rests today,” says Aggarwal. While the emotional cords of the premise are connected to the Kaarigars who are the core of the brand, to evolve is their way of always modernising the cultural roots. However, eternity, the third pillar is what towers the creative vision of the label as it derives strength from the natural wonders of the universe — “Ones that reaffirm our faith in the art of creation,” adds the maestro.
Looking at Amit Aggarwal’s quixotical designs, it might not be easy to guess that the atelier utilises sustainable practices. However, from recycling polythene bags to repurposing heritage sarees, the designer has redefined what it means to be a conscious couture house with his artistic prowess. In a world where there is always a friction between consumer demands and artistic ingenuity, Aggarwal has proven, “Ethical practices in fashion are integral to strike a balance between innovation, practicality, and market demands.”
For instance, Antevorta – COUTURE ‘24, was based on the amorphous nature of ‘Time’. When we asked the designer what was the creative process that went behind creating it, he very frankly expressed, “Honestly there was no specific process. We drew inspiration from a wide array of sources, including nature, technology, architecture, and even scientific concepts. A strong emphasis was laid on the structural integrity and functionality of the garments that were brought to life by our skilled artisans who translate my complex ideas into tangible reality.” On the other hand, Enzym – Spring/Summer ‘24, captured the iridescence of a fish’s fins, and the weightless freedom of a bird in flight. Aggarwal’s distinctive metallic and micro-pleated textiles came to life in this collection.
However, it was impossible to end the conversation without asking the master couturier for his expert advice on style for the women of today. Humble yet charming in his own unique way, he answered, “It is integral to wear things that make you feel empowered, and true to yourself. Fashion is all about celebrating your individuality, so don’t be afraid to experiment, and break boundaries.” With a penchant for innovation, Amit Aggarwal continues to compose a new chapter in the books of Indian fashion, one that surely veers towards eternity. As the label wraps a hectic yet fulfilling 2024, the designer assures us that the coming years will be packed with high-powered collaborations and expansion into International realms.
