Keeping Up With The New Fitness Zeitgeist

Run clubs, coffee raves, Pilates-and-matcha parties, spinning classes on a yacht, yoga on the beach – the fitness landscape today is nothing like it has ever been before. Community workout sessions are now replacing late night hours at the club, becoming a part of one’s daily routine. What began as a small post-pandemic shift has grown to a vital cultural phenomenon with people wanting to spend more time moving rather than being stuck to their screens.

While solo training with headphones on is still a desirable option to many, group workouts have helped a majority of people who just need a little push. So when an entire group of fueled individuals are waiting at the venue, the amplified adrenaline rush boosts encouragement and eliminates the need to sleep in for a few minutes longer. Social media, in this case, plays the role of an unsung hero; one that has quietly but effectively helped in bringing about this change. Be it content around women on reformers in matching sets, or a happy cohort touching their marathon finish line – Gen Z and Millennials are now engaging with topics featuring group activities and diverse workouts that fuel motivation while enhancing mental health. As a result, more people are inspired to take up classes that help them achieve their fitness goals without perceiving them as wearisome tasks.

Radhika Karle, founder, Radhika’s Balanced Body, shares, “Social media has been an amazing tool for us to build awareness, bust myths, and change misconceptions. However, there are always two sides to everything. I do see the struggle between posting things that are visually aesthetic versus a focus on form and the original repertoire of the exercises. The new generation is all about being happy, and there is nothing better than physical activity to release endorphins. Pilates has gained so much popularity among them because it is a form of movement that combines strength, mobility, balance, and coordination.”

The sudden cultural fixation on fitness today reflects something deeper; multiple forms of exercise existed for decades, but the lack of motivation often overshadowed most of it. The image of intense training clouded people’s perception with fear. But now, the rise of community-led sessions is helping individuals figure out the kind of movement they are comfortable participating in. Whether it is weight training, running, Pilates, or barre, having options makes it much easier to build a routine that aligns with one’s schedule, mental and physical health.

On the other part of this spectrum lies the surge of outdoor movements that stray away from studio workouts. Out in the fresh air, run clubs have become a major part of the burgeoning fitness fervour. Aalisha Shah, the founder of Mumbai’s RunBay Club says, “I think the younger generation wants real, offline connections. In a world that’s digital, showing up to run together feels grounding. It is amazing to see how many people arrive in the early hours of a Saturday morning to connect over a simple run. Any sport has a way of making everyone feel like they belong, and I think that’s what’s drawing in the younger crowd. It’s become a space where people come back week afterweek, and start building bonds with the familiar faces.”

However, regarding the unfair portrayal of online trends, Aalisha remarks, “Media can, at times, create unrealistic standards. When fitness is presented as flawless, it can feel unsustainable. That’s why honest content matters so much. Seeing people show up imperfectly is what actually motivates consistency. Fitness doesn’t have to be perfect to work; it just has to be realistic and repeatable.”

Meanwhile, Khyati Kanjani, founder of The Fit Corporate, has tapped into a niche today’s crowd loves – hosting spin classes in unconventional venues, from yachts to nightclubs like Bastian. She says, “My youngest rider has been eleven years old, while the oldest was seventy. People come from all over India for these sessions because nothing compares to working out in the middle of the sea overlooking the Mumbai skyline, or at a club where you usually go to party at night.”

While physical fitness has long been upheld as a talisman for a better life, there is something uniquely appealing about shared experiences that has made the process more joyous. For a generation that has seen the perils of quarantine and no-contact, wellness is more than just looking a certain way; it has more to do with mental well-being and a regulated nervous system above all. While the current boost in interest towards fitness might be perceived as a passing trend, it holds an entire generation’s admiration for well-being that goes beyond what just meets the eye.

Disha Parwarkar

“There’s no such thing as an ordinary blue sweater.” Years later, it still feels like Miranda Priestly understood fashion’s obsession with blue long before the rest of us did.
