In Focus: Kalista

The fashion choices of millennial & Gen-Z women are poles apart from the generations that preceded them. In the age of social media, where each one of us wants to embrace & showcase our unique tastes to the world, fashion has played a key role. Here’s where Kalista comes in with a burst of colour and pattern, giving us so much more to experiment with, and adding that special something to our occasion wear wardrobes.

Launched in 2014 by Pratyush Guglani, it aims to break the monotony with eclectic designs catered to the tastes of the global woman of today. Progressive, playful, and poised all at once, each ensemble showcases contemporary aesthetics and is striking yet free-spirited.

Their muse? World cultures!

“We draw inspiration from our travels. The designs are globally influenced and feature cultural & distinct elements of places we visit. We have a penchant for vintage design that includes florals, and we’re also very drawn towards ethnic charm. We try to incorporate Islamic & Mughal elements in our prints & embroidery,” says Pratyush.

He further adds that they weave them into the prints & colours with extreme precision, offering the Indian wearer fresh, culture-rich occasion wear pieces.

Kalista is not just loved for its lively prints – but their expertise in the field too. Hailing from a family with a background in printing, Pratyush began Kalista with his mother, Poonam Guglani. She has been a key pillar of the label and leads the design process. The designer’s parents forayed into, and began block printing & screen printing over 30 years ago.

The label develops a variety of versatile patterns on a daily basis, hand painting them in-house. Due to this, they are not just able to offer luxury but also affordability to the millennial consumer. What’s more? The flattering, quirky and high-quality garments are perfect for the modern wardrobe.

A multitude of vintage botanical prints and Victorian elements – both major sources of inspiration for the label – can be seen across Kalista’s collections. These are then beautifully accentuated with intricate hand embroidery, resulting in carefully crafted styles that are highly coveted.

While prints are Kalista’s forte, their occasion wear is also highly-celebrated. Fashion enthusiasts seek the label for Mehendi & Sangeet functions. The designs for the same feature vibrant hues and lively motifs. Another set of prints that the label loves using are the English & dainty kind in a pastel and earthy palette.

You’re sure to find yourself thoroughly amazed and in awe of Kalista’s radiant lehengas featuring motifs that can light up your mood & your closet instantly.

Talking about what’s next for the label, Pratyush says, “Our clients often get coordinated outfits made, and keeping that in mind, our Menswear & Kidswear line is all set to launch in the near future.”
