Eat. Play. Perform.: Inside Kinita Kadakia Patel’s Nutrition Philosophy

For years, the language of wellness has revolved around a single number: the number on the weighing scale. Eat less, weigh less. Cut carbohydrates, lose weight. Find the right superfood, accelerate the process. But as our understanding of health evolves, so does the definition of transformation.

For nutritionist Kinita Kadakia Patel, a Metabolic Reset & Body Transformation Specialist and one of the leading voices in metabolic health, transformation begins far beyond the scale. It is about building a body that is strong, energised and metabolically efficient.

Her own journey into nutrition began with an intensely personal question. Fascinated by human biology and an avid reader from a young age, Patel found herself navigating her teenage years while being overweight. The experience affected her confidence and eventually pushed her to understand her own body more deeply. What began as an attempt to decode her own health became a lifelong pursuit of understanding nutrition, exercise and metabolism. “Experiencing that metabolic shift firsthand was life-changing,” she recalls.

Today, she believes one of the biggest misconceptions around nutrition is our obsession with labelling food. “We remain obsessed with tagging items as either ‘superfoods’, ‘fat-burners’, or ‘carbs – the ultimate villains’,” she says. “No single food can single-handedly save or sabotage your health.” Instead, she advocates looking at the bigger picture – diet, movement, sleep, stress, recovery and metabolic health working together over time. That also means moving beyond the traditional idea of weight loss. “Chasing a smaller number on the scale is an outdated paradigm,” Patel says. “Don’t just chase a smaller body – build a vibrant, powerful and metabolically efficient one.”

For those entering their mid-thirties and beyond, she places particular emphasis on preserving lean muscle, supporting metabolic health and maintaining hormonal balance. “Adequate protein distribution becomes paramount here,” she says, calling it a cornerstone of recovery, metabolic rate maintenance and physical vitality.

And while protein has become wellness’s favourite buzzword, Patel believes the conversation should be less about trends and more about consistency. “A vast majority of people, especially active individuals, fail to reach even 80% of their target without intentional planning,” she notes.

Her athlete-focused work offers another perspective on everyday nutrition. As Sports Nutritionist for the Mumbai Indians, Patel sees the same fundamentals at work across elite sport and everyday life: “Balanced macros, structured meal timing, deliberate hydration, optimised sleep and smart recovery protocols.” The takeaway? You don’t need an athlete’s lifestyle to adopt an athlete’s mindset. You need structure and consistency with built-in flexibility.

Ultimately, Patel’s definition of performance extends far beyond the sporting arena. “Performance is about showing up as your absolute best self in daily life,” she says. Whether that means navigating a demanding workday, travelling, staying mentally sharp or simply having the energy to play with your children, the body is performing every day.

And after two decades in the field, her own philosophy has become less about perfection and more about sustainability. Perhaps that is the real shift in modern nutrition: not eating less, but understanding better; not simply becoming smaller, but becoming stronger; and not pursuing perfection, but building a body capable of performing at its best, every day.
