Draped in Dior, Rooted in India

The tyrant of hemlines, designer Christian Dior, once said, ‘Individuality will always be one of the conditions of real elegance,’ and this was a belief that didn’t just echo through fashion history, but was woven into the very fabric of his creations. But when that classic elegance blends with India’s artistic yet dramatic flair, it unleashes a new wave of sartorial phenomenon that reshapes the fashion narrative. In recent decades, India has emerged as a powerhouse of fashion and craftsmanship, showcasing its cultural richness and heritage to the world. This is thanks to renowned designers like Sabyasachi, Amit Aggarwal, Rahul Mishra, Dhruv Kapoor and many others, who have reimagined Indian fashion to appeal to the global audience. While they took over the international market with their core aesthetics rooted in the country, Dior shifted its focus to the subcontinent.

The French fashion giant has already taken its first step towards the diverse country and is ready to brew a cross-cultural romance destined to endure. Case in point: Dior’s landmark Show, which took place in 2023 in Mumbai, was a resounding declaration of the brand’s entry into India’s evolving luxury landscape. Maria Grazia Chiuri, the fashion house’s creative director, partnered with Chanakya School of Craft, with whom they co-created the Fall 23 collection. But their association extends far beyond, as the Mumbai-based atelier previously collaborated with Dior for its Summer-Spring 2022 haute couture presentation. The creations were a heartfelt ode to India’s age-old techniques, such as aari embroidery, mirror work, zardozi, tie and dye, block printing, and more, blending seamlessly with Dior’s high fashion, where each piece was a celebration of handwork and haute couture. With the A-listers from the world of fashion and entertainment in attendance, the label made everyone celebrate their arrival in the Indian market.

Although the iconic Mumbai showcase brought Dior to the spotlight, the brand had already found its way into the audience’s mind through one of their favourite medium, cinema. Sonam Kapoor, who is regarded as a fashion icon and the global brand ambassador for the fashion house, shares a long-standing relationship that spans over decades. She was the first actress to incorporate the luxury brand into her film, Aisha (2010), marking the beginning of her long-standing relationship with the label, which has grown stronger over time. Apart from Sonam, actresses like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, and Ananya Panday, among others, have some of the label’s iconic and timeless pieces in their personal collection.

While everyone is falling in love with Dior products, one can’t help but wonder: what is it about the brand that makes it a favourite amongst the Indian audience? To begin with, the label’s refined and enduring aesthetics naturally resonate with the country’s consumers, who appreciate owning pieces that tell a story of legacy, craftsmanship and fashion across generations. Beyond its designs, the label’s thoughtful incorporation of rich Indian textiles, colour palette, patterns, and intricate motifs reflects a deep appreciation for the country’s excellent artistry, appealing to the audience.

Dior is not just a symbol of luxury, but also the essence of timeless sophistication at its finest. The decision to unveil their Fall collection showcase at the iconic Gateway of India was a powerful statement, showcasing their growing influence in the Indian subcontinent. This move also opens the opportunity to expand their horizon to other South-Asian countries that are growing in luxury fashion. India, being one of the largest consumers of luxury fashion, the French label’s entry into the market is both timely and strategic. It’s only a matter of time before India realises the full potential of what the brand has to offer.
