Imagine being a novice in a field and achieving success with one of your ideas early on – what an impressive feat that would be! This is the story of Kartik, the designer behind the eponymous label Kartik Research. Despite having no formal degree in the field, his remarkable passion and determination enabled him to build a successful career from scratch. Kartik Kumra has lived the dream of many young aspirants through his relentless hard work and steadfast dedication.

However, while pursuing a degree in economics at the University of Pennsylvania, his design ambitions seemed distant and elusive. It was only during the pandemic, with ample time at his disposal, that he seized the opportunity to channel his zeal into bringing his vision to life, culminating in the creation (of what was previously known as) ‘Karu’ that stems from the Sanskrit word which means artisans

To master his craft, Kartik turned to YouTube and studied books by renowned designers, such as Maison Margiela. Two years later, his brand’s designs were featured with prestigious global retailers, including Mr Porter, Selfridges, and Ssense. Amongst the illustrious list of achievements is that he bagged a nomination for the LVMH prize for Young Fashion Designers. His designs have been worn by international icons like Kendrick Lamar, Lewis Hamilton, and Joe Jonas, to name a few. The fast rise has come with immense highs and lows, but he has impeccably sustained it all.

Where it All Began

Kartik discovered a gap in high-end fashion stores where South Asian culture was underrepresented, which inspired him to create his own brand. His vision merges cultural elements with streetwear, crafting a label that aligns with modern masculinity while offering a distinctive edge for men who seek something unique.

A hallmark of his designs is the Kantha stitch, an embroidery technique with deep anthropological roots that has been cherished since the pre-independence era. This traditional art form is not only a signature element of the label but also adds a nostalgic touch. The brand’s commitment to using eco-conscious materials further distinguishes its offerings.

His debut at Paris Fashion Week last season, in collaboration with the iconic UK label Baracuta, showcased an eclectic mix of patchworks, handwoven textiles, and floral embroideries. This collection also introduced his first womenswear line, featuring exclusive embellished Converse sneakers.

For FW24, the label’s collection draws inspiration from Jodhpur, a city in the Thar Desert known for its rich history of sandstone mining. The shoot’s location embodies a juxtaposition of two Indias – one wedged in the vintage era and the other heading into a promising future. This setting beautifully mirrors the designer’s vision for the collection, blending tradition with modernity in a seamless narrative. The show was held at the stunning Le Philanthro-Lab, a 15th-century building in the heart of Paris.

Kartik Kumra has set a new benchmark in the fashion world, making a significant impact across international borders. His work not only gives South Asian talent a prominent voice but also ensures that artisans receive the recognition they deserve.  In just two-and-a-half years of full-time designing, Kartik Kumra has already established a significant presence alongside global luxury brands. From emerging as a new player in the fashion industry to earning an LVMH Prize nomination and dressing A-list celebrities, Kumra’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
