His work transforms each wedding into a visually stunning narrative, evoking a whirlwind of emotions as though we are witnessing the love story unfold live through his lens. Having collaborated with a host of high-profile celebrities, Vishal’s latest endeavour saw him capturing the wedding of India’s Olympic medalist, PV Sindhu and Venkatta Datta Sai.
The moment he unveiled the wedding teaser, the internet was once again captivated, setting social media alight. The breathtaking visuals of Sindhu and her husband, Venkata Datta Sai, sparked a wave of admiration and left the audience yearning for more, creating a fervour that rippled through digital spaces.
We sat down to have a conversation with the creative genius to delve deeper into the details of the wedding. Recounting the journey he and his crew embarked on to capture the couple’s big day, Vishal shared, “For Sindhu, marriage was always a dream. To ensure it turned out the way she envisioned it, understanding the couple’s desires and aspirations was key. We have known them through magazines and newspaper articles, but once you meet them, you realise they are only human and, just like anyone, they have a story. So to understand that becomes your first step in prep. Which later helps you to decide how you will plan the crew, select the perfect shots, curate the soundtrack, thereby setting the overall tone.” This is how Vishal curates his work – by tailoring his approach to align with each couple’s unique vision, guaranteeing that every detail resonates with their individual love story.
The defining element that sets Vishal’s films apart is his mastery of emotional storytelling, paired with a keen ability to highlight the essence of each moment. With PV Sindhu’s wedding, he ensured the narrative stood out, highlighting its depth and significance without ever letting it feel mundane. Explaining how meaningful conversations bring out the best in his work, he shares, “Weddings in India aren’t just about two individuals – it’s about two families with different backgrounds coming together. Talking to everyone involved, like how Sindhu’s father accepted her choice of partner or how her husband embraced her success, allows me to tell a richer, more relatable story. It’s about capturing a unique narrative that can inspire change and evolve societal norms.”
When asked about his most memorable moment during the wedding, the mastermind reminisced, “For me, the scene that stood out was the bride’s entrance, entry’s are always special, accompanied by the explosion of vibrant colour bombs.” Taking us back into the moment, he noted the challenge of perfecting the scene by ensuring they get the height of the colour bombs right in the frame, explaining how he went the extra mile to ensure the moment was executed flawlessly, particularly for the bride.
He also expressed his deep appreciation for the distinctive wedding rituals he had the privilege of witnessing, especially the Telugu tradition. “The Pellikutru ceremony was undeniably one of my favourites,” he revealed. “I was captivated by how the entire community unites in celebration, making it far more than just the bride’s immediate family being involved.”
The teaser opens with a shot of PV Sindhu walking toward the love of her life, and we are immediately immersed in a sensory experience – the sound of the water, the breeze passing by, and the faint chime of her bangles, making it feel as though we’ve been whisked away to the location. When asked how the couple reacted to the teaser, the filmmaker shared, “There were a few tears, as it transported them right back to that very moment.”
The video also featured Seetha Kalyanam as an original soundtrack. A soft, melodic track that fits perfectly, like the final piece of a puzzle, adding a sense of tranquillity. This is, of course, Vishal’s signature touch, as he has an innate ability to capture the pulse of a moment and enhance it with music. He went on to emphasise the crucial role music plays in preserving such memories, explaining how it becomes an inseparable thread in the couple’s emotional journey, forever etched in time.
Reflecting on his choice, he shared, “I’ve encountered numerous versions of the song Seetha Kalyanam while shooting in Hyderabad, and it tells the story of Sita’s marriage to Ram. I aimed to infuse it with a lot more soul, so we preserved the original lyrics to honour the sanctity of Tyagaraja Kakarla’s composition. However, we also incorporated the Mangalyam chant, reimagining and recomposing it while maintaining its traditional essence. The intention was to make it more relatable to modern listeners, all while remaining faithful to the timeless nature of the wedding.”
