Amit Aggarwal, the couturier who has been celebrated for his futuristic reimaginings of traditional silhouettes, has made commanding the runway second nature. Transcending expectations yet again at India Couture Week 2025 with Arcanum – a hypnotic ode to the unseen wonders beneath the human form.
Delving into the microcosmic, the collection celebrated the intricate architecture of molecules, translating their silent brilliance into sculptural silhouettes. The narrative is anchored in DNA – nature’s outline that governs our traits, charts our path, and archives ancestral memory. Centred around five thought-provoking chapters – Origin, Bloom, Pulse, Mutation, and Memory – the show captured the rhythm of life itself. It was a breathtaking union of couture, science, and philosophy, with each ensemble echoing nature’s most exquisite blueprints. Rooted in the language of biology – from cellular division to the evolution of organisms and the unseen energy coursing beneath the skin – each piece resembled a sentient form, alive with movement and meaning.
Origin
The show began with the theme Origin, which spotlighted beautifully tailored cocoon-like silhouettes that perfectly articulate the idea of pure and protective forms. The silhouettes were crafted using hand-woven Nylon and organic cotton.
Bloom
The phase seamlessly transitioned into the next phase, termed Bloom. Here, the silhouettes reflected the awakening of genetic identity, one that could be visualised by witnessing ensembles featuring micro-pleated textures, signature polymers, and luminous hues, creating structural forms that draw parallels to the unfolding of life.
Pulse
The show proceeded flawlessly to the next stage, called Pulse, which introduced movement and rhythm, imitating breath and heartbeat, making every motion feel instinctive and alive. The assemblage in this phase came alive with crystal veins and metallic accents, weaving together a striking vision of existence.
Mutation
The Mutation chapter focused on change, transformation, and the evolution of both the human form and the collection itself, drawing attention to how life is unpredictable and doesn’t appear to be like a straight line. Adding to the sensory drama were the bags they carried, which had trailing slender incense sticks that left a drifting veil of smoke and scent behind. The air felt ritualistic, almost sacred, as if each look wasn’t just a garment but a meditation.
Memory
The final act brought Memory to the forefront, with Aggarwal examining its essence through the intricate lens of DNA – a living code that binds the personal with the universal. Inspired by this connection, he drew a striking parallel to Ikat, the traditional Indian weaving technique, which he likened to a coded pattern, thereby resulting in a compelling statement.
Aggarwal’s Arcanum was both futuristic and deeply rooted in human emotion. The couturier continues to showcase his prowess not merely by reviving the grandeur of traditional weaves, but by transforming them into breathtaking masterpieces, each layered with thoughtful narratives designed to mesmerise.
