For more than three decades, Sonali Dalwani has been a trailblazer in the Indian footwear industry. From her early days in the embroidery business to founding the iconic footwear label Crimzon, Sonali has created a brand that blends luxury and comfort. In an exclusive conversation with First Look, the designer shares her journey, design philosophy, and how Crimzon has created a niche in a market with discerning tastes.
You’ve been in the industry since 1989. Can you tell us about your journey?
Sonali: My journey into the fashion world started right out of school when I worked in the embroidery business with a close friend’s mother, learning the craft. For five years, I focused on creating beautiful embroidery for international designers, but my career took a turn when I joined my uncle’s footwear export company that catered to the European market. That’s where I discovered my passion for shoes. Eventually, I wanted to do something different, so I started my own clothing line, but I soon returned to footwear by launching Crimzon. The idea behind Crimzon was simple: there was a gap in the Indian market for high-quality, well-crafted footwear that combines international flair with Indian sensibilities. That’s where I came into the picture.
How has the footwear industry changed since you first entered the market?
Sonali: The industry has transformed dramatically. When I first started, footwear was largely seen as a functional product—something you wore out of necessity, not for style. But now, with global exposure and the rise of international brands, consumers are much more aware of quality and design. Footwear is no longer an afterthought; it’s an essential part of personal style. Customers today look for shoes that are not only stylish but also long-lasting and comfortable. This shift has really opened up the market for luxury and designer footwear, especially in India.
What is your design philosophy?
Sonali: At Crimzon, we believe in the perfect blend of comfort, craftsmanship, and design. We focus on creating shoes that don’t just look good but also feel great to wear. Comfort is non-negotiable; after all, shoes support your entire body. I make sure each pair is designed with proper arch support, fit, and balance in mind. We also take inspiration from India’s rich heritage, blending it with modern, contemporary aesthetics. Whether it’s intricate embroidery, Mughal-inspired motifs, or Bollywood glamour, we want our customers to feel like they’re wearing a piece of art.
Tell us more about your latest collection!
Sonali: Our latest collection is very close to my heart. It’s inspired by Indian heritage and royalty, but with a modern twist. We launched this collection at our brand-new Kala Ghoda store, and it pays homage to Indian architectural elements like the trellises of the Taj Mahal and the embellishments of the Mughal era. One standout pair, Mumtaz, features laser-cut filigree work reminiscent of the Taj Mahal, while the Nour is adorned with intricate jali-like designs, taking inspiration from Mughal jewels. We’ve also incorporated elements of Bollywood glamour into our designs, drawing inspiration from icons like Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman.
What’s your favourite piece from this collection?
Sonali: That’s a tough one! I think I would have to say the Rekha pair, which is a jewel-encrusted stiletto. Its luxurious design represents what Crimzon stands for—intricate craftsmanship and comfort, all in one. The Ariana pair, our modern take on the traditional Mojri, is also a personal favourite. I love how we’ve blended vintage and contemporary styles in this collection, giving it that timeless oomph factor!
How do you continually ensure both style and comfort – especially for long-term wear?
Sonali: Comfort is a key factor for us, especially because shoes are such an important part of your daily life. We do a lot of research into materials and ergonomics. For example, we use rebound leather and cushioned footbeds to ensure that the shoes are soft yet supportive. We also take great care with fit and slope to ensure that our shoes offer the right balance for long-term wear. I’ve personally trained my eye to spot even minor imperfections, because quality and comfort go hand in hand. We want our customers to feel like they can walk in our shoes all day without discomfort, while also looking fabulous.
