Sabyasachi x The Met: Where Indian Craft Meets the Art of the World

Some collaborations do more than bring two names together; they create a dialogue between two distinct worlds. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Sabyasachi’s newly announced multi-year collaboration is a compelling example. Bringing together one of the world’s most significant cultural institutions and one of India’s most recognisable luxury houses, the partnership opens up an expansive dialogue between art, history and contemporary design.

For Sabyasachi, whose design language has long been rooted in India’s visual and artisanal traditions, The Met offers an extraordinary new vocabulary to explore. Its collection spans more than 5,000 years of art and culture from across the world, encompassing objects whose stories, techniques and histories can be reconsidered through the lens of Indian craftsmanship.

Rather than simply reproducing historic works, the collaboration proposes something more interesting: reinterpretation. Selected objects from The Met’s vast collection will inform a series of contemporary luxury products, allowing centuries-old visual languages to find relevance in a modern context. It is a meeting of archives and imagination, where the museum object becomes a starting point rather than an endpoint.

The first expression of this partnership will arrive in the form of high jewellery. Drawing inspiration from the art of the Byzantine Empire, Sabyasachi’s inaugural collection will debut at a runway presentation during New York Fashion Week on September 15, 2026. The choice of Byzantine art feels particularly compelling within the context of jewellery, with its rich history of ornament, symbolism and intricate craftsmanship offering fertile ground for Sabyasachi’s maximalist yet meticulously considered approach.

The collection will be presented in New York before becoming available at Sabyasachi’s flagship at 160 Christopher Street in the West Village, alongside the brand’s other global stores and select specialty retailers worldwide.

For Sabyasachi, this is also a significant new chapter in an already expansive cultural journey. His work has consistently blurred the boundaries between fashion, jewellery, art and heritage. A collaboration with The Met extends that vocabulary into an institution whose collection is, in many ways, a living archive of the very histories that have shaped global visual culture.
